'Big Brother' Australian government cunning plans to track pokies - one armed bandit winnings received a crappy reception up the NSW coast at Port Macquarie yesterday, where oldie punters raised serious concerns about the impact on their pensions.

Centrelink has previously used data tracked from pensioners using swipe cards at major casinos to count wins and losses as earnings, and demanded repayment, but that's only the tip of the iceberg as to what will come experts say. Thus far Centrelink has refused to tell welfare legal services whether or not other regular gambling wins need to be declared as income, despite the Tax Office not deeming them to be. Until now, it was impossible to track one armed bandit wins. Smartcards that identify each user on a national poker machine network will be introduced from 2012, recording how much has been won and lost, under a deal struck by the federal government with the independent MP Andrew Wilkie. National Welfare Rights Network director Maree O'Halloran said: "We are very concerned that a major problem for pensioners that arose at casinos, where their gambling losses were treated by Centrelink as evidence of earnings, may start to arise in a whole lot of communities now where people gamble on poker machines and they have the new card.'' More than a dozen cases of pensioners whose gambling habit was tracked through swipe cards at casinos and were assessed to owe Centrelink money are awaiting a ruling in the Administrative Appeals Tribunal. The Welfare Rights Network has now contacted South Australian senator Nick Xenophon and Mr Wilkie, saying a "biometric card" to limit gambling losses could reduce high levels of problem gambling, but also had the potential for large numbers of pensioners to be caught by unclear rules on the reporting of income, partly because pensions are means-tested. ''The Welfare Rights Centre supports methods to stop excessive gambling and we know gambling can destroy lives,'' said Ms O'Halloran. ''We are alerting the government to this issue so they can protect, and Centrelink can tell people clearly what income do they have to declare if they gamble.'' Austrac provides data gathered from banks and casinos to Centrelink. Gambling services must monitor and record customer identities and transactions, including the reporting of big payouts to Austrac, under anti-money laundering laws. An Austrac spokeswoman said pubs and clubs with poker machines were not complying with these rules, and it was already in discussions with the sector on how to improve "intelligence gathering". Ms O'Halloran said the use of the swipe card data on gambling as evidence of pensioner income was misleading. ''People sometimes win $100, and lose $400. They can do that within one day … Centrelink would see that as you had $500 worth of income,'' she said. Centrelink has told the centre it assessed gambling wins depending on each customer's individual circumstances.

World's leading listed online gaming operator PartyGaming has announced its financial results for the third quarter of 2010 showing a 9 percent year-on-year increase in total revenues to €85.3 million.
The Gibraltar-based firm operates popular online poker domains PartyPoker.com and World Poker Tour. They also own and operate leading online bingo websites Foxy Bingo, Mirror Bingo, Think Bingo and Cheeky Bingo and revealed that revenues from its casino businesses grew two percent year-on-year to reach €34.9 million.
It's premier online casino brand is PartyCasino.com and they also own and operate Noble Casino, Casino Las Vegas, Swiss Casino, and a number of others.
Although revenues from poker decreased five percent when compared to the same period in 2009 to €29.6 million, PartyGaming revealed that bingo improved by 36% year-on-year to hit €13.1 million while sportsbetting grew by a massive 86% for the three-month period to reach €5.4 million.
“Total revenues were up by nine percent year-on-year with growth in all products except poker despite the impact of having closed our French casino business at the end of June,” said Jim Ryan, Chief Executive Officer for PartyGaming.
“Excluding our French casino, total revenues would have been up by 12% year-on-year driven by casino growth in other markets, acquisitions and a strong performance in sportsbetting.
“We have been encouraged by the strong start from our nascent French poker network that went live on July 1. A strong performance by PartyPoker.fr in France has been further boosted by the launch of PMU’s poker business in France as well as services for AB Groupe and Aviation Club De France.
“In respect of current trading since the end of September, we have begun to see the normal seasonal upturn in-line with the board’s expectations and we remain confident about the full-year outlook.”

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM - 1st November 2010 - Virgin Games, the leading online gaming company, has launched its first ever television advertising campaign for its casino site, Virgin Casino. The 20 second advert, which is part of a £500,000 campaign, uses a space theme to introduce viewers to the world of Virgin Casino and features well know online game titles such as Cleopatra, Da Vinci Diamonds and Monopoly Multiplier. It was produced by ABF Pictures with MGOMD acting as media planners and buyers.
Oliver Wilson, Casino Acquisition Manager, commented: "We had such a fantastic response from our first Virgin Bingo ad launched last year that we decided that this was the right way to go for Virgin Casino. Bingo received a 100 per cent increase in player registrations on the back of the first adverts aired late last year and this evidence suggests it makes absolute sense for TV to play a significant part in the marketing mix for the casino product.

Up to a million of elderly Australians playing poker machines might see their pensions cut after wins as smartcards are introduced to track oldies gambling habits. Yes, they are tracking humans, not rats. Centrelink has previously used data tracked from pensioners using swipe cards at major casinos to count wins and losses as earnings, and demanded repayment, but that's only the tip of the iceberg as to what will come experts say. Thus far Centrelink has refused to tell welfare legal services whether or not other regular gambling wins need to be declared as income, despite the Tax Office not deeming them to be. Until now, it was impossible to track one armed bandit wins. Smartcards that identify each user on a national poker machine network will be introduced from 2012, recording how much has been won and lost, under a deal struck by the federal government with the independent MP Andrew Wilkie. National Welfare Rights Network director Maree O'Halloran said: "We are very concerned that a major problem for pensioners that arose at casinos, where their gambling losses were treated by Centrelink as evidence of earnings, may start to arise in a whole lot of communities now where people gamble on poker machines and they have the new card.''
More than a dozen cases of pensioners whose gambling habit was tracked through swipe cards at casinos and were assessed to owe Centrelink money are awaiting a ruling in the Administrative Appeals Tribunal. The Welfare Rights Network has now contacted South Australian senator Nick Xenophon and Mr Wilkie, saying a "biometric card" to limit gambling losses could reduce high levels of problem gambling, but also had the potential for large numbers of pensioners to be caught by unclear rules on the reporting of income, partly because pensions are means-tested. ''The Welfare Rights Centre supports methods to stop excessive gambling and we know gambling can destroy lives,'' said Ms O'Halloran. ''We are alerting the government to this issue so they can protect, and Centrelink can tell people clearly what income do they have to declare if they gamble.'' Austrac provides data gathered from banks and casinos to Centrelink. Gambling services must monitor and record customer identities and transactions, including the reporting of big payouts to Austrac, under anti-money laundering laws. An Austrac spokeswoman said pubs and clubs with poker machines were not complying with these rules, and it was already in discussions with the sector on how to improve "intelligence gathering". Ms O'Halloran said the use of the swipe card data on gambling as evidence of pensioner income was misleading. ''People sometimes win $100, and lose $400. They can do that within one day … Centrelink would see that as you had $500 worth of income,'' she said. Centrelink has told the centre it assessed gambling wins depending on each customer's individual circumstances.
Tatts CEO Eyes Tabcorp...
Australian gaming and wagering company Tatts Group may consider bidding for the gaming and wagering business of Tabcorp after the rival firm's planned split in 2011, Chief Executive Dick McIlwain said. "We have always been interested, there are a lot of similarities between their businesses," Chief Executive Chief Executive Dick McIlwain told Reuters ahead of the firm's annual general meeting. "In any discussions we have had before, there is quite a difference of opinion on value," he said, adding Tatts would wait for the demerger before making any move. Tabcorp Holdings announced plans this month to spin off its casinos into a separately listed company in 2011, which has spawned talk it is paving the way for its two arms to be taken over. Tatts has long been seen as a potential suitor for Tabcorp's gaming and wagering business.

A coalition government would fit "pre-commitment devices" to all Victorian poker machines so gamblers could how much money they spend. The technology would signal to gamblers to stop once a designated limit was reached and limit losses and damage that problem gamblers do to themselves, Victorian Opposition Leader Ted Baillieu said on Monday. "Pre-commitment respects the right of individuals to make their own decisions and directly tackle their gambling problem," he said in a statement. "The technology helps gamblers to stick to the limits they have set once they start playing pokies." Last month. the gaming industry opposed the introduction of the technology on existing pokies, when the federal government pledged to look at introducing it in exchange for anti-pokies independent MP Andrew Wilkie's support. The Victorian Opposition says gaming venues will have to accept and implement it. Premier John Brumby has said he supports mandatory pre-commitment devices but Mr Baillieu said the Coalition would introduce them from 2012 instead of 2016, under Labor plans. Baillieu said that, if elected, he would also ban lobbyists exerting improper influence over government processes to award gaming and wagering licences. "Victorians have been alarmed by revelations of inappropriate access to sensitive licensing documents by lobbyists during the lottery licence bid and secret negotiations over the expansion of the Crown Casino and a potential second casino," he said. A Coalition government would amend the Gambling Regulation Act to ban such lobbying activities for awarding gaming and wagering licences, he said.
Hey, Hey, It's Saturday Bottom Shots Causes Stir!...
Network Nine has now admitted it made a mistake to show close-ups of the bottoms of young girls in shorts performing on Hey Hey It's Saturday. The shots on the live show were described by celeb singer Ella Hooper as "pedophilic", causing a stir in the studio audience and a storm on Twitter and Facebook, Murdoch media firm News Limited.
"Hey Hey It’s Saturday is a live program, with hundreds of directorial decisions made in rapid succession," a Nine spokeswoman told the News Limited. "The camera angle in question was ill-chosen. However, any offence caused was completely unintentional.”
Hooper, a celebrity judge on Red Faces, commented after a singing and dancing performance by three young girls dressed in a country and western style that the camera angles were inappropriate. In a later judging segment she went further, saying the shots of the young girls were "pedophilic", in response to being quizzed by host Daryl Somers, who asked if she approved of the direction. It is the second time the Red Faces segment on the show has come under the blowtorch since the return of the iconic show. A black faces segment was criticised by another celebrity judge, American crooner Harry Connick Jnr, last year. The subject of the close-ups was widely debated on Hey Hey's Facebook page, where some viewers defended the show and criticised Hooper for exaggerating. Plucka-Duck would not comment on the bottom shots!

James Packer and Network Nine Chief Executive David Gyngell are set for a cricket war with rights renewals up for grabs in the next year. Australian cricket officials expect Packer, now a part of the Ten Network as a major shareholder, to target the lucrative rights to shore up Ten's summer broadcasting slate and add to the list of sports for niche digital channel One HD. Confusion however over the future of One reigns with speculation it could be dropped completely or retooled as a male sports and lifestyle channel. Like his famous father Kerry, Packer has been a fan of cricket since childhood and the newer form of the game, Twenty20, is aimed at Ten's younger audience demographics. It is also a major ratings force for Nine, often pulling figures higher than the showcase Rugby League State of Origin series. Cricket in Australia might be in strife, with front-page headlines today outlining declines in audience, spectators, children playing the game and marketing issues, but indications are that Nine and Ten will fight hard for the rights. Nine has been the home of cricket in Australia since the elder Packer transformed the game around the world with World Series Cricket in the late 1970s. "James loves cricket - there's no question about that," Gyngell told The Sunday Telegraph newspaper. "But I'm running a business and Channel Nine is the home of cricket. It is the backbone of our station over summer and it has been for a very long time." There is mounting speculation that Ten could team with Fox Sports, of which Packer is a major shareholder, to jointly bid for the cricket rights, similar to the Nine and Fox Sports joint deal in place for the National Rugby League. Whatever happens, the broadcast future of the game in Australia appears secure. The current broadcast rights expires in May 2013. Let's just hope there's no more cricket betting scandals.
Another Attack Outside Burswood Casino...
An elderly woman who fought back against a handbag snatcher in Perth has suffered a cut lip, broken teeth dentures and bruising as she and her daughter were robbed. The 73-year-old mother and her 37-year-old daughter were returning to their car in the car park of the Burswood Casino about 10.20pm on Sunday when a car full of 5 teenage boys pulled up beside them. Police said one teen asked the daughter for $10 for petrol but when she refused he asked her the time then grabbed her handbag. Another of the youths then grabbed the mother's handbag, Sergeant Gerry Cassidy said. "The mother put up more of a struggle and was pulled to the ground and she's got a cut lip, broken dentures and bruising to her arm and leg." Police are searching for the mongrels, aged between 16 and 18, who escaped with both women's' handbags.

Network Nine has now admitted it made a mistake to show close-ups of the bottoms of young girls in shorts performing on Hey Hey It's Saturday. The shots on the live show were described by celeb singer Ella Hooper as "pedophilic", causing a stir in the studio audience and a storm on Twitter and Facebook, Murdoch media firm News Limited.
"Hey Hey It’s Saturday is a live program, with hundreds of directorial decisions made in rapid succession," a Nine spokeswoman told the News Limited. "The camera angle in question was ill-chosen. However, any offence caused was completely unintentional.”
Hooper, a celebrity judge on Red Faces, commented after a singing and dancing performance by three young girls dressed in a country and western style that the camera angles were inappropriate. In a later judging segment she went further, saying the shots of the young girls were "pedophilic", in response to being quizzed by host Daryl Somers, who asked if she approved of the direction. It is the second time the Red Faces segment on the show has come under the blowtorch since the return of the iconic show. A black faces segment was criticised by another celebrity judge, American crooner Harry Connick Jnr, last year. The subject of the close-ups was widely debated on Hey Hey's Facebook page, where some viewers defended the show and criticised Hooper for exaggerating. James Packer and Network Nine Chief Executive David Gyngell are set for a cricket war with rights renewals up for grabs in the next year. Australian cricket officials expect Packer, now a part of the Ten Network as a major shareholder, to target the lucrative rights to shore up Ten's summer broadcasting slate and add to the list of sports for niche digital channel One HD. Confusion however over the future of One reigns with speculation it could be dropped completely or retooled as a male sports and lifestyle channel. Like his famous father Kerry, Packer has been a fan of cricket since childhood and the newer form of the game, Twenty20, is aimed at Ten's younger audience demographics. It is also a major ratings force for Nine, often pulling figures higher than the showcase Rugby League State of Origin series. Cricket in Australia might be in strife, with front-page headlines today outlining declines in audience, spectators, children playing the game and marketing issues, but indications are that Nine and Ten will fight hard for the rights. Nine has been the home of cricket in Australia since the elder Packer transformed the game around the world with World Series Cricket in the late 1970s. "James loves cricket - there's no question about that," Gyngell told The Sunday Telegraph newspaper. "But I'm running a business and Channel Nine is the home of cricket. It is the backbone of our station over summer and it has been for a very long time." There is mounting speculation that Ten could team with Fox Sports, of which Packer is a major shareholder, to jointly bid for the cricket rights, similar to the Nine and Fox Sports joint deal in place for the National Rugby League. Whatever happens, the broadcast future of the game in Australia appears secure. The current broadcast rights expires in May 2013. Let's just hope there's no more cricket betting scandals.
Another Attack Outside Burswood Casino...
An elderly woman who fought back against a handbag snatcher in Perth has suffered a cut lip, broken teeth dentures and bruising as she and her daughter were robbed. The 73-year-old mother and her 37-year-old daughter were returning to their car in the car park of the Burswood Casino about 10.20pm on Sunday when a car full of 5 teenage boys pulled up beside them. Police said one teen asked the daughter for $10 for petrol but when she refused he asked her the time then grabbed her handbag. Another of the youths then grabbed the mother's handbag, Sergeant Gerry Cassidy said. "The mother put up more of a struggle and was pulled to the ground and she's got a cut lip, broken dentures and bruising to her arm and leg." Police are searching for the mongrels, aged between 16 and 18, who escaped with both women's' handbags.

Mildura Casino Proposal Still Alive; Not Dead Yet!...
The ALP says a proposal for a casino in Mildura is not dead, despite the Coalition and Greens refusing to support it. The Government has always indicated the casino would require bipartisan to go ahead but the Opposition parties now say the social costs are too high. However, the ALP's Member for Northern Victoria, Candy Broad, says an interdepartmental inquiry looking at the $400 million project will run its course. "We believe the Nationals and Liberals are letting down Victorians in the Mildura region by refusing to even support an investigation into the social and economic impacts of the proposal," she said. "The fact is that no-one can be certain what the social and economic impacts of this proposal are until they have been assessed. "It remains our view that this proposal could potentially create jobs and investment in the area, that is why we set up an interdepartmental [inquiry] committed to look at the proposal and evaluate its impact on the Mildura region - we intend to continue with that investigation."

South Australia's racing industries have reached a settlement they say will ensure them adequate compensation as punters increasingly turn to the internet to bet. Bookmaker Sportsbet has dropped legal action that was blocking payments being made to horse and greyhound racing in SA. Thoroughbred Racing SA estimates the breakthrough will mean an annual return from all online bookmakers of approximately $5.5 million annually for its operations. Chief executive Jim Watters believes the success of the negotiations was critical for prize money and the future of racing generally. "Without the introduction of that (payment) very seriously it was going to undermine the racing industry in South Australia," he said

The news appointment of James Packer and Lachlan Murdoch to the board of directors at the Ten Network added a new and complicating twist to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission's examination of the impact on competition following Packer's share raid on the television network. It also raises questions about the effectiveness of cross-media ownership rules as the media platforms continue to blur and players take stakes in various listed and non-listed media companies and assets.
It is understood that the news of Murdoch's appointment to the Network Ten board has prompted the ACCC to widen its scope to include Murdoch's private and family interests in the media, which includes News Corporation. It also means the ACCC will look at how NBN Co fits into the mix, given Siobhan McKenna, who is a managing partner of Murdoch's privately held company Illyria, sits on the NBN Co board. Packer and Murdoch have joined forces before, including in the failed One.Tel and a botched attempt to privatise the Packer-controlled pay-TV investment company Consolidated Media more than two years ago. Their arrival on the Ten board comes as the government is on the verge of a new draft of the anti-siphoning regulations that dictate the carve-up between pay and free-to-air TV of certain sporting events. This is crucial to Fox Sports, which is jointly owned by Packer and News Corp, and the pay TV operator Foxtel, which is 50 per cent owned by Telstra, 25% owned by the Packer-controlled Consolidated Media and 25 per cent by News. From the point of view of the ACCC, Fox Sports competes with Ten's digital sports channel One for sports rights. One will cost Network Ten more than $20 million over the next year. If this is phased out, it will be one less competitor bidding for sporting rights. It is an indication of how incestuous media is becoming. Kerry Stokes controls Seven Network and West Australian Newspapers and has a significant stake in Consolidated Media. Murdoch sits on the News Corp board, has 9.8& of Prime TV, which is a Seven affiliate, and he bought half of DMG Radio last November. The ACCC chairman, Graeme Samuel, said last month that the watchdog was interested in the consequences of Packer taking an 18% stake in Ten, rather than his actual shareholding. ''It's controlling influence over a company's affairs that's far more important,'' he said. Samuel's concern was that Packer might have bought 18% of Ten, but there were three other shareholders on the Ten share register who have said they were supportive of Packer: WIN TV's Bruce Gordon, who has a 13 per cent stake, and the fund managers Perpetual and Paradice, with combined holdings of almost 15 per cent. Thus his actual control could be far greater. With this in mind the ACCC sent letters to various parties and asked them to communicate what they were doing. This will now be extended to Murdoch. The ACCC is conducting its review of Ten on the ''hypothetical assumption'' a combination of shareholders may vote together to control Ten, and what they then might do that could lead to changes in company strategy that could have an impact on competition. On this basis the ACCC will look at the impact of the purchases of content, the supply of content and advertising. If it finds that there is a substantial lessening of competition from the arrival of Packer and his hypothetical takeover of Ten, it has the power either to ask a court to order the sale of the shares under section 50 of the Trade Practices Act or take court orders to stop certain transactions taking place. Packer wants Ten to focus on viewers aged 16-39 - Ten's old target market - as well as sell its outdoor advertising business and change its strategy for its digital channels One and Eleven. Using one of Ten's high-definition channels to broadcast Sky News is also believed to be part of the strategy. One observer said: "Packer and Murdoch will say they don't control Ten … but Nick Falloon didn't cease an executive role just for fun … and clearly Packer will downsize Ten sports." If Packer and Murdoch can get away with it, it will be a media coup at a modest price of $300 million. However, the deal is a bit of small fry in comparison to Packer's main game: gambling, and the opportunities about to be presented with the break-up of Tabcorp. It's clear that Packer thinks Crown is undervalued. Last month he spent $200 million lifting his stake to 43%. Crown's market cap is $6.3 billion, valuing Packer's stake at just under $3 billion. Tabcorp's casino business includes Star City, Jupiters Gold Coast, Jupiters Townsville and Treasury in Brisbane. Its overall market cap, including its gambling, wagering and casino business, is $4.5 billion. Gambling and media are two industries that are riding a roller coaster and you can bet the ACCC will continue to watch both closely.
Pokies Should Show Odds Of Losing; Not Winning!...
Pokie machine operators should be forced to display the odds of winning and losing on every machine, an Australian mathematician has gone on record with. Victoria University's Tristan Barnett, who has spent years calculating poker machine betting odds, is calling for legislation to be changed to protect consumers and help problem gamblers. His latest research, set to be published in the Gaming Law Review and Economics, has found in one hour of play on a $1 poker machine, at 18 spins per minute, the expected loss for a player is $108. But he says there is a 35% chance of losing more than $300. "Giving those extreme statistics might change the decision of the consumer and how long they might actually play for," he said. Dr Barnett says statistics on profit/loss odds are currently too hidden. "The workings or the mechanics of the poker machine are driven by the mathematics and consumers are not given that information and that information is not even available," he said. "Poker machines are the only casino game where you can't calculate the complete set of mathematics - the information is just not available." Dr Barnett says pokie machines mislead consumers by only showing how much gamblers have won and not how much they have lost. "You've got to take into account the amount you've actually put into the machine and the amount that's actually being returned - they need to be combined together with the total profit," he said. "Say if a player was to bet $10 on a machine and if they were to get a return of $7, the machine would actually display a win when it's actually lost money. "The machine should actually indicate when they've actually won money and when they've lost money. "It's not realistic - it's actually misleading and unfair." Dr Barnett says even though pokie machines have to show the per cent house margin - how much the machine will take in the long run - that is not enough to properly inform consumers. He says the per cent house margin is generally about 10%, but it is as high as 17% in New South Wales. He says manufacturers deliberately avoid properly informing consumers. "It's to do with the marketing. Obviously the manufacturers want it to look as if these machines will be a good experience and they tell the consumers they're winning as much as possible and they're not actually indicating how much they're losing," he said. "And, of course, giving the information that losing more than $300 is a high per cent chance isn't a very good incentive to play the machine. "So to some extent it is misleading and consumers are being taken advantage of." The chief executive of the Australian Gaming Machine Manufacturers Association (AGMMA), Ross Ferrar, says its members' machines display all the necessary information required by law. "Our members' gaming machines comply with all the standards that are required by states," he said. "It varies state by state." Ferrar points to Victoria, where certain information is required on player screens, like the probability of winning top five, and he says AGMMA's members comply with such rules. Stay tuned for more.

Aussie advertising and horse racing king John Singleton and investment banker friend Mark Carnegie are set to add to their pub empire with the purchase of Paddington landmark (in Sydney) The Bellevue Hotel. The famous watering hole in Hargrave Street is owned by well-known chef Damien Pignolet. His co-owner, psychologist Ron White, passed away in May while on a walking holiday in Britain. The pair bought The Bellevue from publican Susie Carleton and political lobbyist Eric Walsh for $5.5 million in 2004. Under Carleton and Walsh's 25-year stewardship, The Bellevue was a renowned Labor party haunt, the scene of wild celebrations for former Aussie PM Paul Keating's ''True Believers'' victory and an even wilder one to celebrate the life of Labor stalwart Mick Young. The purchase price for The Bellevue has not been disclosed as yet. Singleton and Carnegie have bought a string of hotels this year including Kinselas in Darlinghurst for $12 million and the Manly hotel The Steyne for about $28 million. They also bought the Peakhurst Hotel earlier this year from bankrupt publican Richard Wynne for about half the $20 million that Mr Wynne paid for it only a year earlier. The pub investments are being done through Carnegie and Singleton's bankrolling of the Riversdale group, run by Paddy Coughlan and Rod Kelly. The hotel industry has slumped over the past 18 months. Many hotels have been selling for greatly reduced prices. According to Coughlan, many publicans have relied too heavily on profits from poker machines and have not paid enough attention to hospitality. The consortium's plans for Kinselas include refurbishment of the upstairs bar and the opening of an entertainment venue on the third floor. It is likely that Singleton and Carnegie will add more pubs to their impressive portfolio. Coughlan said the group had between $50 and $100 million to buy distressed hotels. ''Once we reach our initial target of $100 million we plan to take the distressed pub fund public with the backing of our consortium and investors,'' Coughlan has said previously. Singo is understood to have an interest in getting into the online gambling sector and raping up the horse racing sector on the internet, and Media Man will be putting forward a proposal on this in the coming months. Australian Gambling Wars: Tatts Group Eyes Tabcorp!...
Tatts Group chief Dick McIlwain has confirmed his company's interest in acquiring Tabcorp's wagering and gaming business. He revealed that he would be closely monitoring his rival's planned demerger over the coming months. Speaking outside the Tatts AGM a couple of days ago, McIlwain said the two companies had held numerous discussions about potential transactions over recent years but had failed to agree on price. "Obviously, part of (Tabcorp's) business -- the gambling business -- is of some interest to us. It's the same kind of business as us," he told News Limited "It's got to happen first. We've got to see the consequences of (the demerger) and what it does for the share price of the ongoing part of the business. We're not in any hurry." Shares in Tabcorp have risen strongly since the company last week announced its plan to split its casinos business from the main gaming and wagering group. Several analysts say the move will position the company for a takeover. Mr McIlwain agreed that the demerger had merit, pointing out that the business of running casinos and hotels, which typically required significant ongoing investment for facility upgrades, was different to running a gambling business where cashflows and earnings were more reliable. "What it does do is it makes it easier for investors to choose. It makes it easier for shareholders and makes it easier for acquirers as well," he said. While Tatts only recently completed its acquisition of NSW Lotteries, which it expects to contribute a further $120 million in operating earnings by 2014, Mr McIlwain said a sound balance sheet ensured the company remained "opportunistic" and "acquisition-enabled". Tatts recently reported a $119m profit for the year to June 30, down from $277.4m the previous year on the back of a writedown to its loss-making British gaming venture Talarius. Following a tough period for most companies exposed to discretionary spending, signs of renewed confidence in the economy were starting to emerge, Mr McIlwain said. "Consumers, punters, players . . . have started to put their hands deeper into their pockets now," he said. He told the meeting that revenue and profits across the group had improved since July 1. And while he noted that the analysts' consensus was for underlying operating earnings to increase from $560m to $650m in 2011. It appears there's a strong chance that Tatt's will grab Tabcorp's wagering business, but this may take months or even over a year to happen. First the demerger, than things should fall into place.

However, the deal is a bit of small fry in comparison to Packer's main game: gambling, and the opportunities about to be presented with the break-up of Tabcorp. It's clear that Packer thinks Crown is undervalued. Last month he spent $200 million lifting his stake to 43%. Crown's market cap is $6.3 billion, valuing Packer's stake at just under $3 billion. Tabcorp's casino business includes Star City, Jupiters Gold Coast, Jupiters Townsville and Treasury in Brisbane. Its overall market cap, including its gambling, wagering and casino business, is $4.5 billion. Gambling and media are two industries that are riding a roller coaster and you can bet the ACCC will continue to watch both closely.
Pokies Should Show Odds Of Losing; Not Winning!...
Pokie machine operators should be forced to display the odds of winning and losing on every machine, an Australian mathematician has gone on record with. Victoria University's Tristan Barnett, who has spent years calculating poker machine betting odds, is calling for legislation to be changed to protect consumers and help problem gamblers. His latest research, set to be published in the Gaming Law Review and Economics, has found in one hour of play on a $1 poker machine, at 18 spins per minute, the expected loss for a player is $108. But he says there is a 35% chance of losing more than $300. "Giving those extreme statistics might change the decision of the consumer and how long they might actually play for," he said. Dr Barnett says statistics on profit/loss odds are currently too hidden. "The workings or the mechanics of the poker machine are driven by the mathematics and consumers are not given that information and that information is not even available," he said. "Poker machines are the only casino game where you can't calculate the complete set of mathematics - the information is just not available." Dr Barnett says pokie machines mislead consumers by only showing how much gamblers have won and not how much they have lost. "You've got to take into account the amount you've actually put into the machine and the amount that's actually being returned - they need to be combined together with the total profit," he said. "Say if a player was to bet $10 on a machine and if they were to get a return of $7, the machine would actually display a win when it's actually lost money. "The machine should actually indicate when they've actually won money and when they've lost money. "It's not realistic - it's actually misleading and unfair." Dr Barnett says even though pokie machines have to show the per cent house margin - how much the machine will take in the long run - that is not enough to properly inform consumers. He says the per cent house margin is generally about 10%, but it is as high as 17% in New South Wales. He says manufacturers deliberately avoid properly informing consumers. "It's to do with the marketing. Obviously the manufacturers want it to look as if these machines will be a good experience and they tell the consumers they're winning as much as possible and they're not actually indicating how much they're losing," he said. "And, of course, giving the information that losing more than $300 is a high per cent chance isn't a very good incentive to play the machine. "So to some extent it is misleading and consumers are being taken advantage of." The chief executive of the Australian Gaming Machine Manufacturers Association (AGMMA), Ross Ferrar, says its members' machines display all the necessary information required by law. "Our members' gaming machines comply with all the standards that are required by states," he said. "It varies state by state." Ferrar points to Victoria, where certain information is required on player screens, like the probability of winning top five, and he says AGMMA's members comply with such rules. Stay tuned for more.
John Singleton And Mark Carnegie Buy Bellevue Hotel; Pokie VS Entertainment Debate...
Aussie advertising and horse racing king John Singleton and investment banker friend Mark Carnegie are set to add to their pub empire with the purchase of Paddington landmark (in Sydney) The Bellevue Hotel. The famous watering hole in Hargrave Street is owned by well-known chef Damien Pignolet. His co-owner, psychologist Ron White, passed away in May while on a walking holiday in Britain. The pair bought The Bellevue from publican Susie Carleton and political lobbyist Eric Walsh for $5.5 million in 2004. Under Carleton and Walsh's 25-year stewardship, The Bellevue was a renowned Labor party haunt, the scene of wild celebrations for former Aussie PM Paul Keating's ''True Believers'' victory and an even wilder one to celebrate the life of Labor stalwart Mick Young. The purchase price for The Bellevue has not been disclosed as yet. Singleton and Carnegie have bought a string of hotels this year including Kinselas in Darlinghurst for $12 million and the Manly hotel The Steyne for about $28 million. They also bought the Peakhurst Hotel earlier this year from bankrupt publican Richard Wynne for about half the $20 million that Mr Wynne paid for it only a year earlier. The pub investments are being done through Carnegie and Singleton's bankrolling of the Riversdale group, run by Paddy Coughlan and Rod Kelly. The hotel industry has slumped over the past 18 months. Many hotels have been selling for greatly reduced prices. According to Coughlan, many publicans have relied too heavily on profits from poker machines and have not paid enough attention to hospitality. The consortium's plans for Kinselas include refurbishment of the upstairs bar and the opening of an entertainment venue on the third floor. It is likely that Singleton and Carnegie will add more pubs to their impressive portfolio. Coughlan said the group had between $50 and $100 million to buy distressed hotels. ''Once we reach our initial target of $100 million we plan to take the distressed pub fund public with the backing of our consortium and investors,'' Coughlan has said previously. Singo is understood to have an interest in getting into the online gambling sector and raping up the horse racing sector on the internet, and Media Man will be putting forward a proposal on this in the coming months. Australian Gambling Wars: Tatts Group Eyes Tabcorp!...
Tatts Group chief Dick McIlwain has confirmed his company's interest in acquiring Tabcorp's wagering and gaming business. He revealed that he would be closely monitoring his rival's planned demerger over the coming months. Speaking outside the Tatts AGM a couple of days ago, McIlwain said the two companies had held numerous discussions about potential transactions over recent years but had failed to agree on price. "Obviously, part of (Tabcorp's) business -- the gambling business -- is of some interest to us. It's the same kind of business as us," he told News Limited "It's got to happen first. We've got to see the consequences of (the demerger) and what it does for the share price of the ongoing part of the business. We're not in any hurry." Shares in Tabcorp have risen strongly since the company last week announced its plan to split its casinos business from the main gaming and wagering group. Several analysts say the move will position the company for a takeover. Mr McIlwain agreed that the demerger had merit, pointing out that the business of running casinos and hotels, which typically required significant ongoing investment for facility upgrades, was different to running a gambling business where cashflows and earnings were more reliable. "What it does do is it makes it easier for investors to choose. It makes it easier for shareholders and makes it easier for acquirers as well," he said. While Tatts only recently completed its acquisition of NSW Lotteries, which it expects to contribute a further $120 million in operating earnings by 2014, Mr McIlwain said a sound balance sheet ensured the company remained "opportunistic" and "acquisition-enabled". Tatts recently reported a $119m profit for the year to June 30, down from $277.4m the previous year on the back of a writedown to its loss-making British gaming venture Talarius. Following a tough period for most companies exposed to discretionary spending, signs of renewed confidence in the economy were starting to emerge, Mr McIlwain said. "Consumers, punters, players . . . have started to put their hands deeper into their pockets now," he said. He told the meeting that revenue and profits across the group had improved since July 1. And while he noted that the analysts' consensus was for underlying operating earnings to increase from $560m to $650m in 2011. It appears there's a strong chance that Tatt's will grab Tabcorp's wagering business, but this may take months or even over a year to happen. First the demerger, than things should fall into place.

James Packer Plays In Own Charity Poker Tournament, by Greg Tingle - 31st October 2010
G'day punters, casino and media millionaires and billionaires, politicians and one and all. In big Australian casino and poker news, Crown Limited king of the castle, James Packer, is playing in Crown's Joe Hachem - Shane Warne poker tournament. Packer is on a roll as of late in both a business and philanthropic realm, and this will certainly give the living legend more time to practice his poker face, as he continues his reentry into the Australian mainstream media business with the Network Ten deal and such. Media Man and Gambling911 get you a front row seat at the poker table with this special report on 'Our James' and friends...
JP's no doubt learned a few valuable lessons under his late father Kerry Packer over the years. This weekend 'Our James' will have the opportunity to show off a few of his skills in the most unique of circumstances, which should result in a win - win - win - which tends to be typical of the Packer way.
Here's a quick history lesson for you...In one famous casino "raid" on Caesars Palace casino circa 1992, Kerry Packer snatched $US9 million at the baccarat tables. In plan his stack of chips represented US37¢ a share to the casino's listed holding company, Caesar World Inc, and bankers and top brass didn't know if they were coming or going under, if you get the picture.
In a famous tie in to Kerry's casino heist on Caesar's he apparently halved the casino's quarterly earnings. "He (KP) single-handedly, by himself, demolished that trading quarter," Caesar's chairman Henry Gluck would later revel.
Now some two decades later 'Our James' will make an extremely rare showing on the gaming tables at Crown, but shareholders like Media Man and friends need not loose any sleep. JP is a celebrity entrant in the Joe Hachem and Shane Warne charity poker tournament, and the winnings are understood to be "limited", so Crown won't be bankrupted by its own money man or anyone else, not this weekend anyway.
We've learned that under current Victorian legislation, Crown employees (including management) are banned - barred from playing at the casino, and that iron fist extends right up to 'Out James', chairman no less.
Good mate Shane Warne who is known to help raise funds for his own charitable foundation, of which JP is an ambassador...the casino applied for a special exemption from the Victorian Commission for Gambling Regulation, and we're pleased to report that it was granted.
Packer's also going to say G'day to some folks at Flemington for the Victoria Derby and will be pressing the flesh with many celebs and poker nuts, and a few high rollers, at the Crown felts.
Seats at the charity event put punters back $1000. JP's no doubt learned a few valuable lessons under his late father Kerry Packer over the years. This weekend 'Our James' will have the opportunity to show off a few of his skills in the most unique of circumstances, which should result in a win - win - win - which tends to be typical of the Packer way.
Here's a quick history lesson for you...In one famous casino "raid" on Caesars Palace casino circa 1992, Kerry Packer snatched $US9 million at the baccarat tables. In plan his stack of chips represented US37¢ a share to the casino's listed holding company, Caesar World Inc, and bankers and top brass didn't know if they were coming or going under, if you get the picture.
In a famous tie in to Kerry's casino heist on Caesar's he apparently halved the casino's quarterly earnings. "He (KP) single-handedly, by himself, demolished that trading quarter," Caesar's chairman Henry Gluck would later revel.
Now some two decades later 'Our James' will make an extremely rare showing on the gaming tables at Crown, but shareholders like Media Man and friends need not loose any sleep. JP is a celebrity entrant in the Joe Hachem and Shane Warne charity poker tournament, and the winnings are understood to be "limited", so Crown won't be bankrupted by its own money man or anyone else, not this weekend anyway.
We've learned that under current Victorian legislation, Crown employees (including management) are banned - barred from playing at the casino, and that iron fist extends right up to 'Out James', chairman no less.
Good mate Shane Warne who is known to help raise funds for his own charitable foundation, of which JP is an ambassador...the casino applied for a special exemption from the Victorian Commission for Gambling Regulation, and we're pleased to report that it was granted.
Packer's also going to say G'day to some folks at Flemington for the Victoria Derby and will be pressing the flesh with many celebs and poker nuts, and a few high rollers, at the Crown felts.
